"Rebirth" Of Sewing

Sewing Courses

Hi Sewing Friends:

I'm seeing more about sewing every day. Sewing courses are attracting the younger crowd who want to express their individuality. Hooray! I couldn't be happier!

Sewing is "IN" and is a hot topic once again thanks to reality TV shows like Project Runway and do-it-yourself home dec shows.

Sewing Salons where you can go to learn to sew or "hang out" with other creative sewers are popping up all across the country. It's not just like Granma's sewing circle, but similar.

More new sewing magazines are coming out. Even the big national magazines and newspapers are covering the "rebirth" of the sewing craze. And sewing sites on the internet are growing in number and popularity every day.

If you are thinking about learning to sew or getting back into sewing to either sew your own clothes, recycle or revamp some of your old ones or if you are into home dec, you might consider taking a sewing course. There are a lot of creative fabric arts that might interest you, too. Check it out.

To begin, learn how to operate a sewing machine by going to a sewing machine dealer in your area. Once you have that mastered, try some basic sewing courses where you learn to sew simple projects.

The most convenient way to take a sewing course is to get a downloadable sewing course ebook.
You can work at your own pace whenever you want (even 2 AM) and you have a permanent copy of the detailed sewing instructions that you can use for many of your sewing projects or garments.

The best part is you don't have to travel anywhere and you don't have to take your own notes. You don't have to worry about missing a class. You don't have to wait for the class schedule to offer what you want. The sewing information is always available to you.

It's a great way to express your creativity. Your friends will think you are so talented and "cool" when you tell them, "I made it!"

Check out this site for some common sense sewing courses that include a new fitting method for skirts and pants and basic and couture sewing courses. Go to:
1st Step To Sewing Success

Here is another sewing blog (sister blog to this one) with tons of free sewing projects, sewing tips and techniques and adding more all the time:

Remember, you are the designer! You will learn a lot about sewing and have fun, too. Sewing is a very rewarding hobby and can be a money-making skill. Take a sewing course today!

It just makes sense!

How To Remove Fusible "Gunk" From Your Iron And Fashion Fabrics

Hi Sewing Friends:

Judith needed to know how to get fusible off her iron and ironing board.

Fusibles can make a big mess when we slip up with the iron. That is easy to do when we are busy working on a sewing project.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Here are some tips to remove fusible "gunk" from your iron and fabrics.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Try a Hot Iron Cleaner called "Iron Off" that is usually available in fabric stores to clean the bottom of your iron. It not only removes fusible webs, but any build-up of starches, etc., that you may get on your iron. A little goes a long way.

Another "old fashioned" trick that my Mom taught me many years ago is to put some table salt on a piece of wax paper and run your warm iron over that to clean your iron.

Another product you can use is called, "Goo Gone" to clean your iron.

Lighter fluid also works. Be very careful with this flammable fluid.

To Remove Fusibles From Fabrics

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Keep a small bottle of denatured alcohol to remove fusible agents from fashion fabrics. You can get this in a pharmacy. Put it in a small spritz bottle and spray just a little on the fabric, then sponge it with a piece of white cotton cloth. Always test on a piece of scrap fabric first to make sure you aren't going to harm the fabric.

Sometimes, fusibles will come off by just pressing with another piece of scrap fabric.

You don't want that fusible on your next sewing project or garment. So, make sure all the fusible "gunk" is gone before you use your iron and ironing board again.

It just makes sense!

Marian

How To Sew A Jeans Skirt That Fits

Hi Sewing Friends:

I know a lot of you wear Jeans skirts. People of all ages and sizes wear them.

I've gotten a few questions about sewing Jeans skirts.

It is sometimes difficult to find exactly what you need for your figure in ready-to-wear. They are too short or worn or faded looking right where you don't want to emphasize a certain part of your body. You know what I mean.

When you sew, you can have whatever style features you want. Here are some tips to help you sew your Jeans skirts. Check out my post, "How To Sew A Jeans Skirt That Fits" on my Sewing Project Tips Sewing Blog.

What Lining Fabric Should You Use When Sewing A Knit Jacket?

Lining knits

Hi Sewing Friends:

Do you want to sew a lining in a knit jacket?
Wondering what lining fabric to use when sewing knits?

Here is a sewing technique that will help you achieve sewing success in lining knits.

When you want to fully line a knit jacket to give it a better quality look, try using a woven rayon lining fabric called Ambiance Bemberg Rayon or you might use a light weight polyester fabric.

"Ambiance", one of my favorite lining fabrics. It is 45 inches wide, breathable and washable and is available in lots of colors at Denver Fabrics or Fabric.com

The trick to make it work with the knit is to cut the woven lining fabric entirely on the bias to allow the lining to give with the knit.

You should allow about an extra 1/2 yard of additional lining fabric to be able to cut it on the bias.

Sewing Tip: Cut the lining with 1" seam allowances and let the lining hang for about 24 hours before you put it into the jacket.

The lining may grow in length and get more narrow in width.

Before your sew it, recheck it with the pattern and recut the lining to fit inside the jacket before you stitch it. You don't want the lining drooping below the knit jacket when you wear it.

The extra 1" you allowed for seam allowances in the original cut should be enough to allow for the possible narrowing of the lining.

When you recut the lining, cut it as the sewing pattern with 5/8" seam allowances this time.

Then, construct the lining the same way as you would if it were cut on the lengthwise grain.

Lining knits with bias woven fabric allows both fabrics to stretch together and provide more comfort for you while providing you a top quality garment.

It just makes sense!

Enjoy sewing and lining knit fabrics.

To Your Sewing Success,

Marian

Fitting Tip - How To Move A Bust Dart

Fitting Tip - How To Move A Bust Dart

Hi Sewing Friends:

Just got back from AZ where we spent New Year's Eve with our son. We went to a lovely party and I really enjoyed seeing all the different outfits everyone wore. What a variety! One in particular caught my eye. It was a lovely sheath dress with a sheer overcoat. It fit pretty well however, the gal's bust darts were in the wrong place and spoiled the look of the dress. Someone had made the dress for her and used a lot of couture techniques in the construction. If only the bust darts pointed to her bosom, it would have been perfect.

Don't let this happen to you. Move your bust darts to point to the apex of your bust for a better fit.

Here is an easy way to help you find your bust point and to move your bust darts on your sewing patterns.
