Sew Lingerie Clasps Or Strap Holders To Keep Undergarment Under Garments

Hi Sewing Friends:

I just returned from Parent's Weekend at my granddaughter's college. It was great to have a family get together.

We had a wonderful time enjoying all of the activities and events. We attended church services at the college chapel.

Since I had difficulty hearing what was being said, my eyes tended to wander about checking out the fashions. Folks were there from all over the world. Everyone dressed very casual. That seems to be the norm these days. It's casual to the point of looking like they just rolled out of bed and came in what they slept in. I know it's a different generation, but really!

I can't believe how visible undergarments are. It really isn't very attractive. The thongs and boxer shorts show above the low cut jeans. Bras show everywhere and don't leave much to the imagination.

That inspired me to write the following article. Hope you can use it!

To Your Sewing Success,

Marian

For those of you who prefer to keep your "undergarments" under your garments, here is a little tip on how to make "lingerie clasps" or "strap holders" to keep your straps in the proper place.

Make these discreet clasps from lining fabric or even rayon hem tape or ribbon.

They really help keep lingerie straps from showing and also act as an anchor to keep the neckline from falling away from the body and exposing everything from neck to waist every time you lean over.

These clasps can be attached to the inside at the shoulders and at the widest point of some necklines to control the dress and straps.

Here is how to make lingerie clasps.

From lining fabric:

1. For each clasp, cut a straight strip of fabric 1-3/4" long and 3/4" wide.
2. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, right sides together.
3. Stitch 1/4" from the fold.
4. Turn strip right side out and press with seam along one edge.
5. Turn in raw edges at the ends and slip stitch.

You can also use 1/2" wide ribbon or seam tape to make the clasps.
Just cut 1-3/4" long; fold the width in half to 1/4" and top stitch.

Put on the dress or top over the lingerie you intend to wear with it and mark with pins where you want the clasps to be attached.

Clasps always open toward the neck.

Sew the end of the clasp farthest from the neck to the shoulder seam.
Sew half of a small snap to the free end.

Sew the other half of the snap to the shoulder seam beneath the end of the clasp to line up with the snap already on the clasp.

For a wide neck, sew an additional set of clasps inside the neck in the same way. Attach the clasps to the facing or lining of the garment.

Now you have total control of those wandering straps and fall away wide necklines.

It just makes sense!

Understanding Underlining

Hi Sewing Friends:

Maybe you don't hear about underlining a garment that much anymore, but when you do, you need to understand just what it is and what it does and why you should do it.

Underlining is a terrific technique to master to take your sewing to a higher level to achieve even greater sewing success.

Sandra Betzina wrote a very good article in Threads Magazine about "Understanding Underlining". I think she explains it very well.

I've included the link here for you to check it out.

When You Sew, Do You Know How To Find Your Waist Line?

When you work on a sewing project, do you have trouble trying to find your waist line?

Some waist lines are not as obvious as others. You think you know where it is, but you aren't sure.

You need to know this even for basic sewing.

So many sewing instructions tell you to do this or that from your waist line.

If you can't find it, how can you follow the instructions?

As women age, they get thicker in the middle and really have difficulty trying to figure out where their waist is.

Another reason so many of you have this problem is because you don't wear garments at your natural waist line, especially in the last few years with so many garments cut below the waist.

There is a difference between where your natural waist line is and where you might wear your garments or be forced to wear your garments because of the ready-to-wear clothes available on the market today.

Here are some tips to help you find your natural waist line.

  • Tie a narrow piece of elastic around your middle
  • Bend to the right side
  • Bend to the left side
  • Bend forward
  • Bend backward
The elastic will roll to where your body bends.

Voila! That is your natural waist line.

It may not seem like the best place, but it is where your body naturally says it is.

Garments will be more comfortable there.

Don't worry if your waist isn't level. Mine is up in the front, down in the back, up on the right side and down on the left.

Have you ever put on a pair of panty hose, hiked them way up trying to hold in your "blubber" and watched what happened?

The minute that you bend, they will roll right to where your body bends and the "blubber" just
spills out over the top.

Place a 1" waist band at that spot on your body. Bend in all directions. Wear it around the house for a while. It should settle at your natural waistline. When it feels comfortable, continue with the rest of your measurements.

You really should use your natural waist line when you are fitting a master basic pattern. This is particularly true for pants and skirts.

Then, once you have your fit, if you choose to wear your garments below the waist, just make a design change to a copy of your master basic pattern.

Copy design changes from other sewing patterns or garments and learn how to apply them to your master basic pattern that you know fits you. Don't start from scratch trying to fit another pattern.

The rule is: Fit your natural body, then create your designs.

It just makes sense!
